What is CBD?
On today's outing to Cannabizoo, we're going to take a look at one of its old residents. CBD (cannabidiol) is a 100% natural, legal and safe substance that occurs naturally in the cannabis plant.
Unlike its rambunctious neighbor THC (the one that can make you "high"), CBD is not psychoactive, which means it won't cause you to experience changes in consciousness. In recent years, CBD has become a popular tool for those looking for a non-narcotic alternative treatment.
Zoo keeper or what does CBD do?
CBD is one of over 150 cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. These compounds have the ability to interact with the human body through the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which plays a key role in regulating a range of bodily functions, including:
- Mood
- Immunity
- Sleep
- Pain
You can think of the endocannabinoid system as a vigilant owl, constantly watching over everything in the body to make sure it's working as it should 🦉. It is responsible for maintaining homeostasis, or the internal balance of the body. When something in the body is not right – for example, the balance of hormones is disrupted, inflammation is present, or the body is experiencing stress – the ECS steps in.
Health Pavilion: What is CBD used for?
The effects of CBD are wide and varied, which is the reason for its growing popularity among animals and breeders alike.
The anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects
CBD is often sought after for its ability to reduce inflammation and relieve chronic pain, especially in people suffering from arthritis or other inflammatory diseases (such as Crohn's disease).
Therapeutic effects
CBD is a potentially effective aid in the fight against stress and anxiety – its anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) properties can bring a great sense of well-being to your mental life. There are many studies looking at CBD and depression, with one for example concluding that CBD shows anti-anxiety and anti-depressant effects in animal models 🐭.
But we're not just talking about depression here, CBD could also play a positive role in schizophrenia, burnout syndrome or panic disorde, for example.
Sleep support
Its role in promoting sleep is also significant. Imagine a bear getting ready for hibernation – relaxed and ready for a long rest. 🐻 Thanks to its ability to relax and harmonise the body, CBD can potentially also help improve the quality of sleep, which is particularly appreciated by people suffering from insomnia or frequent awakenings during the night.
And that's not all. CBD is also used in the treatment of epileptic seizures, for example, thanks to Epidiolex, which contains pure CBD and has been approved for the treatment of rare forms of epilepsy.
CBD is also being investigated for its potential effects in skin problems such as acne and psoriasis, or neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.
Safari warning: Side effects of CBD
⚠️Caution, just as you can be in danger on a peaceful safari, CBD can also have unwanted side effects. These include:
- Low blood pressure (blood pressure below 110/80 mm Hg)
- Dry mouth
- Fatigue and drowsiness
- Diarrhoea or vomiting
- Nausea
- Rash
Tracking the Herd: How Long Does CBD Stay in Your System?
It depends on how often you take it, what dose, and how you take it. 🧪 If you take it just once, it will stay in your system for about 2 to 5 days. For regular users, it can stay in your body longer because CBD tends to get stored in fatty tissue.
The effects of CBD vary depending on the method of administration – with oil or capsules, the onset is within 30 minutes to an hour and lasts about 4 to 6 hours, while with vaping, the onset is almost immediate but the effects tend to be shorter, about 1 to 3 hours.
It also always depends on your individual sensitivity.
CBD gift shop – what souvenir to choose?
CBD products most often appear on the market in the form of:
- CBD Oils and Drops
- CBD Tinctures
- CBD Sprays
- CBD Flowers
- CBD Vape
- CBD Extracts and Concentrates
- CBD Cartridge
- CBD Liquids
- CBD Beverages
- CBD Cosmetics
Relaxation corner with CBD oil
CBD oil is a product made from hemp extract, which contains CBD and other natural substances from hemp. This extract is dissolved in a carrier oil such as MCT, olive or hemp oil, making it easy to consume and dose. 🌿 CBD oil may help you with managing stress, anxiety, pain, and promoting overall relaxation.
CBD oils fall into three categories, depending on how much cannabinoids and phytochemicals they contain:
- Full-spectrum oils contain all the cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids present in cannabis, including trace amounts of THC (less than 0,3 %).
- Broad spectrum oils also include a range of cannabinoids (e.g. CBC, CBN, CBG and CBDA) and other substances, but do not contain any THC.
- CBD isolates are the purest version, with only pure CBD in combination with a carrier oil.
Feeding time! How to take CBD oil?
The easiest way is to drip a few drops under your tongue using a dropper and let it soak in for a while. 🐍 This gets the CBD into your body faster and as already mentioned you'll feel its effects within 30 minutes to an hour.
Again, dosage is individual and depends on factors such as weight, age, metabolism and specific health needs. As a beginner, you should start with lower concentrations (e.g. 5% or 10% CBD oil) and gradually increase the dosage according to the effects.
Conclusion
CBD is a non-psychoactive substance from cannabis that has become popular for its potential health benefits such as pain relief, reducing inflammation, promoting sleep and relieving anxiety. CBD oils are made from hemp extract dissolved in a carrier oil, and there are three main types: full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and CBD isolates. Each of these types differs in their cannabinoid content and the presence of THC. CBD oil is easy to take, most often by dropping it under the tongue, and the dosage is customisable to individual needs.
